Helen’s recent post about homemade crumpets coincided with the rekindling of our love for them. We eat them now and again but not regularly, once we’ve got through one packet though it usually isn’t too long until we reach for another until we tire of them and then repeat the process a little while later.
I cooked dinner last night (pesto pasta with hot smoked salmon, green beans and tomatoes) and was planning on photographing Stephen’s dinner when he got home but he decided just to eat leftovers, hence the lack of post. He got hungry later on in the evening though and ate a crumpet with Marmite and cheese, which instantly sealed my lunch choice for today.
I wouldn’t normally post about lunch but since there’s been a lack of posts lately and there isn’t likely to be any for a few days, I thought I’d mention this. They were really good too, otherwise you’d have been staring at the butternut soup for a while longer.
I’m not sure if I’m brave enough to try making my own but I’m curious as to how different they are to shop-bought crumpets.
I looked enviously at Helen’s crumpets too! Yours look yummy!
I’m quite envious of anyone who has successfully made their own crumpets! They look so tricky to make I’ve never given them a whirl…
Even shop bought crumpets differ – my favourites are Warbutons, by a long way. Either with lashings of butter and marmite or with toasted cheese like yours!
I love love love cheese on crumpets…but with marmite too? Interesting…how much do you spread on?! xxx

Curious Cat, you only need a very thin spread of Marmite. I got the idea from a place that sold cheese and Marmite bagels and figured it should translate to crumpets pretty well too!

I made crumpets once – they tasted absolutely like a real crumpet (shock!), but it was stessier frying them, than popping a shop bought in the toaster.
I mean obviously mine were better than shop bought 😀 but I was shocked they were ‘real’.
This is the standard breakfast plate for the girls in my house! How strange is that, and i dont have to ask them to “eat up” when this is in front of them, its also part of our morning after recovery menu!
Do it do it do it! Not on a week night though, it takes longer than you think. It’s also messy. Don’t let me put you off! They are superior to the shop bought crumpet – the shop bought ones taste incredibly synthetic in comparison. Do iiiiiiiitttt!

I know just what you mean when you say they tasted real, Gobbler, it always amazes me when something I cook tastes that way! I’ve heard that the frying is tricky, I’m gearing myself up for it though!
I offered the littlest girl cheese on toast over Christmas, BB, and she told me in no uncertain terms that what she actually wanted was cheese and Marmite crumpets 🙂

Exactly that! R always mocks my exclamations of “It tastes REAL!”. The frying is easy, it’s just hot, a bit smoky plus I was doing it for guests and could only do two at a time so I was fraught.
RIGHT! I am having cheese and marmite crumpets before I start that bloomin’ diet on Monday.
