Pancake

Ginger -

The obligatory pancake post! We didn’t do anything complicated having had quite an elaborate dinner, pancakes don’t lend themselves to healthy eating either unfortunately so we stuck to the traditional lemon and sugar. Fred had cinnamon on his though, quite a lot as it turned out due to a mis-shake of the jar.
Had we [...]

Cheesecake

Ginger -

Two of my colleagues had birthdays this weekend which coincided nicely with my discovery of Pixie’s cheesecake recipe. As regular readers will know, baking isn’t really my forte but this year I’m determined to master at least one good dessert. We don’t have a food mixer but I checked with Pixie and she [...]

Tablet

Ginger -

Tonight we’re going to a Burn’s Night party at a friend’s house, it’s become an annual tradition (much like Burn’s Night itself funnily enough!) and is always a lot of fun. There is of course haggis, neeps and tatties but there is also a performance element to the evening which everyone is encouraged to [...]

Chocolate Fondant

Ginger -

Did I say we were starting our new year diet on Monday? In the spirit of going crazy we decided to make something chocolatey for dessert and opted for these chocolate fondants from the James Tanner book that I received when I did the Cook The Books show for Channel Five.
Serves Two:
65g chocolate
65g butter
2 eggs
37g [...]

Mince Pies and Mulled Wine

Ginger -

Today we made mince pies. I can’t remember making my own since I was small but I certainly eat enough of them every year (not until 1 December though).

We made mincemeat to this recipe (which I think is Nigella’s):
Hettie Potter’s suet-free mincemeat
Makes about 2kg
250g soft dark sugar
250ml medium dry cider
1 kg cooking apples, peeled, [...]

Things en Croute

Fred -

Last night we had an informal dinner party of sorts. I had four consecutive vintages of the same wine that I’d bought on trips to South Africa and wanted an excuse to open them all at once and do a comparative tasting. So this was the excuse for it. More on that [...]

Rice Pudding

Ginger -

I made a rice pudding yesterday and almost burnt my mouth in my hurry to taste it as soon as it came out of the oven. Although it was hot, it wasn’t long before I realised I’d forgotten to add the sugar. I managed to rescue it today though by re-heating some with [...]

Cool Stuff

Ginger -

Today was pretty difficult to get excited about, it was dark when I woke up, it was raining and of course, it was Monday. I would have preferred to stay at home in my pyjamas but I did the right thing and went to work.
Imagine my delight when I got there to be presented [...]

Cobnuts

Ginger -

Fred went to the Hammersmith Farmer’s Market on Thursday and came back with cobnuts! We were both really excited by this as we’d read a lot about them but never seen them before. They’re a bit like hazelnuts and grow mostly in Kent.
I was worried they were destined for the same fate as the [...]

Blackberry Fool

Ginger -

We picked up some really nice looking blackberries yesterday but when we came to eat them they were really sharp. We decided to make them into blackberry fool but substituted the mascarpone for some leftover cream cheese. The result was very cheesecake-like, which I liked but Fred wasn’t that keen on.
