Smoked Mackerel Tart, Salad, Mince Pies and Sparkling Wine

Kerri -

One of the best things I discovered on holiday was the fish snoek. I had it plain, smoked, in salad, fried, deep fried and as pate. Stephen’s mum also made a brilliant snoek tart. Sadly, snoek isn’t available here so we tried to recreate the tart using mackerel. It worked really well. There’s also spinach […]

Chorizo and Curly Kale

Kerri -

Thursday is vegetable-box delivery day, which means Wednesday is inevitably using-up-last-week’s-vegetables day. Tonight, we had a surplus of curly kale (we have courgettes and spinach too but let’s not talk about that) so we combined that, with Stephen’s birthday chorizo, some cream, onions and salt and pepper. It was good, quite similar to the Cabbage […]

Banger and Mash-and-Carrots-and-Kale

Stephen -

Bonfire night. Have to have bangers and mash according to Kerri. I heartily endorse this idea. So before a delay-ridden and noisy teenager-ridden bus trip to Alexandra Palace to watch fireworks, we tucked into this meal. The sausages were sage and onion (and pork, obviously) from the Kerri Pig. They were fairly coarse in texture, […]

Chicken and Cabbage

Kerri -

Did I mention that we got a cabbage in our vegetable box again this week? For the fourth week in a row. I used to like cabbage. Maybe I’ll like it again one day but, at the moment, it’s up there with spinach as of my least favourite vegetables (I used to like spinach too […]

Chorizo and Cabbage

Kerri -

Stephen was given a huge (and really tasty) chorizo for his birthday and we were given a huge cabbage (again) by the vegetable box people so, in an effort to use up the cabbage, and just because we wanted to eat chorizo, we came up with the delight you see before you. Chorizo, fried with […]

British Tapas

Stephen -

Being my birthday, we decided to have a party. Kerri and I had been discussing the topic of “British Tapas” for quite a while and talking about what sorts of dishes (if any) would both fit this category and be delicious. So we decided to do some experimentation and invited some people round to be […]

Sausages and Mashed Potatoes… and Lentils and Cabbage

Stephen -

Lincolnshire sausages with lots of sage. Mashed potatoes that turned out pleasingly well as it was made from emergency-bought potatoes. Onion gravy made with onions that caught ever so slightly and went just the right colour of brown to match their rich flavour. And the pièce de résistance: Puy lentils cooked with onions, lardons, garlic […]

Apples and Pears

Kerri -

We receive a weekly vegetable box and have done for about six weeks, sometimes it’s been good, sometimes not so good. When we originally decided to sign up for one, we did so because we thought it would help us to eat more fruit and vegetables and also give us the opportunity to eat more […]

Guinea Fowl, Duck and Wood Pigeon Casserole…

Stephen -

…served with crème frâiche cabbage and crushed new potatoes. The casserole also contained shallots, celery, thyme, cider and crème frâiche. It was good, but the wood pigeon was a little dry. Perhaps we should cut the poor little thing into larger pieces next time.
